How a water softener works
Water softening resin is essential for the ion exchange process in water softeners, removing minerals present in hard water.
Inside the softener tank, small resin beads with a negative charge attract calcium and magnesium ions with a positive charge present in the water. These beads are preloaded with sodium ions before use. During the process, hardness ions are captured by the resin, releasing sodium ions into the water.
To continue the cycle, the softener must be regenerated. This is achieved by a brine solution, which is created by adding salt to the softener. The positive charge of the resin allows the compound of sodium chloride in the brine to be broken, thus replenishing the sodium ions in the resin beads and allowing the ion exchange process to repeat.
